What military skills best translate

The new program, the first of its kind in Wisconsin, is designed to help veterans discover what military skills best translate to civilian industry and their area of interest.

"I've been given the opportunity to work on a project with a machine on the floor that needs refurbishing, be involved in time studies, process improvement through value stream mapping, modifying processes and learning how Manitowoc works," said Biggs, who attended Sturgeon Bay High School before graduating from Milwaukee School of Engineering with a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering.

While attending MSOE, Biggs was part of the ROTC program at Marquette University, which led to a commission as a second lieutenant. He was honorably discharged in July after four years of active service including deployment to Afghanistan. His military service continues as a member of the inactive ready reserve.

"I would envision this program to be a great benefit to other veterans who someday follow in my footsteps," said Biggs, whose wife, Christina, also served in the Army and is a logistics manager at Spancrete in Valders.

As a displaced worker and a veteran, Biggs is eligible to participate in the program through a federal grant subsidizing the wages provided by Manitowoc Crane.

"We want to support veterans ... they have skills we can use ... they are very disciplined," said Patti Denk, Manitowoc Crane Human Resources director. "Things they learn in the military can match up to our needs here ... it is a win-win."
